Melva

Senior Service Manager & Translator for CEW

Pronoun: She/Her/Hers

WHAT IS YOUR SPECIALTY?

I can knit and crochet, but I prefer to crochet. I love to make desserts and enjoy ballroom dancing. You can find me experimenting with new recipes, waltzing or even dancing the tango when I am not at Hamdard Health Center.. I like to help people, especially people who are non-English speaking. I was a refugee myself twenty years ago and I appreciate the chance to give back to my community and help people access the support and care they need in this country.

WHO TAUGHT YOU HOW TO KNIT/CROCHET?

My mom taught me to knit and crochet when I was 10 years old. I have find making relaxing. Crotchet allows me to breathe easier and create space to distance myself from the difficult things I have experienced.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED WITH CEW?

I have been involved with CEW for five years. I came initially to refresh my brain of the patterns I learned as a child and over the years have rejoined the group as a maker and translator.

WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT?

I am passionate about helping my community and bridging language barriers that divide people.
